Red Lipstick

While browsing the moisturizer aisle at Sephora, a voice called to me. "Do you like this lip color?" I turned to see a stunning black woman with almond-shaped eyes, deep cocoa-brown skin, and beautiful salt and pepper natural hair. Her full lips were covered with a bold bright red color.

"I love it on you! You look absolutely stunning, and that lip color truly pops!" She smiled back at me, seemingly grateful for the affirmation.

However, I could sense her doubt as she fiddled with the tube of red lipstick. Whispering, she said, "I love it too. But this bright color is for the young folks. What would people think?" She giggled.

I studied her, trying to find the right words. "What if today were your last day on earth? Do you think it would truly matter what others think of your bright red lipstick?" I asked with a smile, hoping to ignite a spark of liberation within her.

In that instant, she threw her head back and her laughter filled the air. "You know what? I needed to hear that!" she exclaimed before patting my arm and strutting towards the counter, with the tube of bright red lipstick held firmly in her hand.

Friends, let this be the year of self-empowerment, where we prioritize our own thoughts, joy, needs, and opinions above the NOISE of others. Your identity and worth do not depend on the validation of others. Period!

Resist the temptation to conform to what you believe others want you to be. And remember, quite often, those who you think are scrutinizing you, are actually grappling with their challenges and pile of life stuff.

What others think of you is not your business! So, shift your focus inward and boldly wear your version of the bright red lipstick that represents your individuality and self-expression. No approval necessary.

Enjoy your day, rockstars!
